Alex Acuna, 6, receives a breathing treatment before school from his caregiver and grandmother Mary McGinnis. She is his full time In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) provider. After years of searching for a diagnosis for Alex's severe disabilities the UC Davis' Mind Institute was able to pinpoint the cause as a chromosomal micro duplication. Alex's micro duplication causes developmental delay and intellectual disability as well as features of autism spectrum disorder. These disorders are characterized by impaired communication and socialization skills, as well as delayed development of speech and language.
